KEY PROJECT

Working smarter to unlock the hidden potential of Greenland in a virtual field campaign.

  • Secured up to 54,000 physical samples from across Greenland

  • An irreplaceable and under-analysed store of data from all across the country across 30+ years of exploration

  • Big data and modern analytical techniques allows Greenfields to conduct a virtual field campaign spanning the country

PROJECT SUMMARY

Greenfields has secured a huge trove of samples from across Greenland to unlock the potential of the mineral region through a virtual field campaign. These samples a practically irreplaceable in terms of money and time… Greenfields has the key to unlocking Greenland.

UNLOCKING THE SECRETS OF THE PAST

Across a 30+ year period, the Greenlandic state owned mining company NunaMinerals conducted an extensive exploration campaign across Greenland, building up a huge archive of physical samples from across the country. NunaMinerals was subsequently privatised and became bankrupt. Many of the samples were not analysed in their or entirety or to levels capable with modern techniques. Consequently, Greenfields sees a substantial potential to for key minerals was likely overlooked.

The samples were identified in a warehouse in Nuuk, Greenland, and Greenfields took the opportunity to buy the complete set - some 60 tonnes of samples with data from across the country. We estimate that replacing the full set of samples would require decades of field work and a budget that would make even the world’s richest mining company squirm. The samples effectively give us access to irreplaceable data. Holding the samples gives us the opportunity to use modern techniques to unlock its value.

asking the right questions in the right way

Often an exploration program is carried out with a very narrow focus of interest, and in so doing, it misses valuable opportunities relating to other minerals (e.g. there was very little interest in battery metals ten years ago). By having access to the actual rock samples, we can can essentially complete a huge field campaign without needing to enter the field. Much of the virtual data from the NunaMinerals campaign is not publicly available, and that which is available is often clearly incorrect. The true value of the data can only be unlocked by holding the actual rock samples, and Greenfields now holds all of them.

We use modern geological techniques which are significantly more effective than those used in the past. Big data techniques allow us to quickly draw out trends and outliers in the data for further analysis. We focus our enquiries on the known prospective minerals, but an analytical approach allows us to keep one eye on unforeseen discoveries. By asking the right questions in the right way, we will develop a huge proprietary dataset to unlock the potential of the whole country - all without a single day in the field.
